By all accounts hot rodding is a sensory activity.  Visually, it’s the color, the sparkle and the “look” of a particular vehicle, and in motion it’s the wind in your hair and the sensation of speed.  But equally important is sound.  In the extreme it’s the visceral noise of the Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars which can shake you to your very core, or the much quieter tone of a high-performance engine tuned to perfection. Less obvious is music.  Since the early 1950s, hot rodding and high performance have been the basis for a huge body of recorded work.  Builder, restorer and historian Dave Shuten of Galpin Garage was struck by the sounds, graphics and innovation of hot rodding and racing at an early age and began collecting not only musical albums but records featuring sounds of race cars at speed.  Dave has graciously agreed to share 144 albums from his collection with the museum to show another aspect of this significant cultural scene we call hot rodding. – Greg Sharp, museum curator

Special thank you to our contributors: Dave Shuten for his support and loan of his collection, Dave Tourjé/California Locos and additional special friends to the museum for helping to support the Hall of Champions renovation and realize this exhibition.
